Purchasing one of our raffia products from Madagascar helps the local economy in very direct ways, especially in the rural communities where our producers live. Sales of these products provide jobs not just to the artisans and exporters in Madagascar, but also to hundreds of other people who supply and produce raw materials and components for their finished goods. Since 1994, we have sold over $1.5 million worth of raffia products from Madagascar, injecting over $400,000 into Madagascar's struggling economy. At least 60% of that money has gone directly to the rural communities where our producers live and work.

The economic benefits from sales of these beautiful pieces have had important social consequences as well. The artisans working directly with Madagascar Arts decided to form a benefits pool for cases of disability. All the artists pay into the pool and when one of them is injured or becomes sick, they may withdraw money from the pool to help them survive until they can work again. Madagascar Arts now also pays into the government-sponsored health insurance program for all its employees, giving them free access to government clinics to treat them and their families.

As the Madagascar Arts has developed, its managers and members have also gained valuable skills, such as computer and e-mail skills, as well as knowledge of foreign markets; these skills have helped them improve sales for their artists. The next step in their organizational development could well be the formation of a fair trade association that will help them receive better prices for their products.

The New Year is barely in the door and we are already looking to our favorite celebrities to show us how to make this our best year in Fashion yet. Anne Hathaway is a celebrity style icon in the making already, with her raven hair and creamy skin. With her fashion break out role in The Devil Wear Prada, the public took notice of her expressive appearance. While recently in the pages of Vogue and InStyle magazines, she resonates in Versace, Thakoon, and Marchesa. Her casual side is appealing to many as well, having been photographed in a military influenced jacket. This Sergeant Pepper inspired look will be hot in 2009, and will be seen in electric blue, orange, and red, in addition to the more traditional look of black or olive. Pair with form fitting pants, boots, and a simple t-shirt. The fashion accessories can be pared down as shiny metallic buttons will festoon across the jackets. Piles of metal chains will be your ideal accessory choice for a plain shirt.

Love her or hate her, Victoria Beckham will continue to rule the fashion world, with the fashionistas waiting hungrily for her next hair style or statement. My Overstock Boutique: Helping Clothing Boutiques Forced to Close

My Overstock Boutique is an online and brick and mortar consignment service for new clothing from other specialty boutiques. This consignment business assists boutiques forced to close in bad economic times.
Mebane, NC (PRWEB) February 9, 2009 -- Meg Thomas sold her traditional consignment shop in order to relax and move away from being a retail shop owner. Her idea was to continue to sell items for boutiques on consignment via the internet from home and she created http://www.MyOverstockBoutique.com. As the economy changed the retail environment, Thomas soon realized that My Overstock Boutique was growing too quickly to continue to be a home based business.
The business moved into a 7800 sq ft warehouse with a showroom to make room for the incoming inventory placed on consignment from Boutiques. The Boutiques that do business with My Overstock Boutique ship all of their excess stock, where it is placed in My Overstock Boutique's database. As items sell at a discounted price, the revenue is split 50/50 with the Boutique supplying the inventory. My Overstock Boutique partnered with over 100 boutiques in 2008.
"We want this process to be easy for the small business owner. Our system is set up for low risk for the boutique at the highest return as possible," says Thomas. "We want the business to be able to send us their overstocks and we sell their merchandise online and in our warehouse. Our large warehouse space allows us to accept large shipments so the business owners can unload quickly."
My Overstock Boutique's warehouse used to hold open to the public weekend sales once a month. Due to customer demand as well as the desire to return to the brick and mortar retail industry, My Overstock Boutique is adding regular retail hours to the warehouse. "I missed my customers and need more than internet business relationships", said Thomas who owned a retail shop for 18+ years. "The economy has certainly helped my business," states Thomas "and I feel great that I am able to share my business success with local customers."
The current economic trends have added more customers as well as boutique suppliers to her roster. Thomas says, We are in our prime in slower economic times. It is fulfilling because our customers are happy and our boutique owners are happy because they are receiving checks."
Consignment terms are: all merchandise is priced 50% off of retail prices. The boutique owner and My Overstock Boutique split the selling price 50/50 after the sale (up to 25% of retail price). Checks are mailed monthly. Contract terms are available upon request.

Part 3 in a Series on Loyalty Retailing
It seems innocent. Retailers offer frequent shopper cards to their customers so that they can better understand them. Understanding their customers allows retailers to make better assortment decisions and improve the efficiency of the supply chain.

A more efficient supply chain and better assortment allow retailers to target their customers with goods and services that meet the customers' needs. Meeting needs creates loyal customers and drives retail sales.

Everyone wins, right? It depends.

When the data is used strictly to aid in category management, it can be a tremendous asset. If the retailer shows a lack of respect for customer privacy (as we examined in part 2 of this series) or customer intelligence, it won't inspire loyalty and may become an annoyance.

How many frequent shopper cards do you have in your wallet right now? Chances are if you live in an area with more than one supermarket, you have several.

The consumers are not showing loyalty to the store by signing up for their cards. They are showing that they will do what they have to in order to get the discounts. They are submitting to being tracked and are willing to present their cards in order to keep their food bills within budget.

Active anti-card privacy group, No-Cards Shoppers, believes frequent shopper cards insult shoppers and do not really save anyone money. More and more customers are beginning to agree. Several local news stations around the country have run tests in response to disgruntled shoppers' claims that retailers inflate prices only to offer savings equal to the old price.

It's hard to argue when the price of a gallon of milk is raised a $1.00 the week before a frequent shopper card is instituted, only to be discounted a $1.00 for customers who use the new card a week later. There is no actual savings over the old method, only now, the individual customer's milk purchases can be tracked. This is hardly a way to win friends and create loyal customers.

Other retailers may not increase prices prior to implementing a frequent shopper program, but they almost all significantly decrease the number of non-card discounted items they offer their customers. The items that would have been offered to anyone at the discount before the cards were implemented, now cost non-card holders the regular price.

These retailers haven't anticipated each specific customers' need for milk. But now, they know who is buying milk, in what quantities, and at what price, and especially, in conjunction with what other other products.

The grocery retailer armed with the information that this customer buys two gallons of whole milk a week and 1 mega-pack of diapers, but does not purchase baby food, would be able to assume that this family has at least one child at home between 1 and 2 years old. Now the retailer can begin to target and use the data to anticipate this particular shopper's needs.

Anticipating needs is the holy grail of loyalty marketing. When retailers can anticipate their customers' needs they begin to win loyalty. Retailers who match products to their customers' behavior are focused on their shoppers.

Using collected data to target their product categories and give customers what they need, when they need it is what these programs are supposed to be about. The best category management has always focused on the customer, even before the advent of loyalty programs.

Smart retailers combine their targeting with their category management and learn how to use their data in collaboration with manufacturers. Both retailers and manufacturers bring unique knowledge and insights to the table. Combining business knowledge of both with a customer purchase history database makes it much easier to target specific offers to specific customers.

Using the data from loyalty programs to determine that shoppers prefer traditional red, white and green Christmas decorations in contrast to fashion colors and making those the largest part of your assortment is good.

Using data from loyalty programs to determine order quantities for a special promotion of new line of pantyhose is good. Using the same data to notify customers who typically buy several pairs of pantyhose a month that there is a sale this week on a new line in her preferred brand is great.

Determining quantities, deciding if a new product fits in a particular store, and selecting colors for spring fashions are excellent uses for data that help the customer. So is using frequent shopper data to personalize the shopping experience for the customer.

How to Shop for Designer Clothing on a Budget

Designer prices often leave us stunned and gasping for air. The antidote for sticker shock lies somewhere between outlets, e-commerce and consignment shops.
Figure out the clearance sale schedule of your favorite designer's store, or the high-end boutiques and specialty stores in your area. Many stick to January for spring/summer items and July for fall/winter items, while others may have an annual clearance weekend where surplus goods are priced to sell.

Step 2:
Remember that high-end designer outlets are often tucked far away from urban areas where department stores sell the same merchandise. Visit the outlets nearest to you (or in the vicinity of your next vacation spot) for the biggest selection of designer duds.

Step 3:
Make sales associates your ally - they know what's available, when it will be marked down, and how to keep reduced items from landing in someone else's closet. Get on the mailing list of your favorite stores to receive postcards and announcements for sales and clearance days.

Step 4:
Log on and check out the items being sold in classified ads, auction houses and online outlets. You'll discover everything from handbags and shoes to evening gowns and hair accessories.

Step 5:
Visit a consignment shop in an affluent area. Many customers wear items once or twice before sending them to consignment in favor of the latest trends.

Tips & Warnings
Make a habit to shop out of season. You may not want to think about cashmere sweaters or riding boots in the middle of July, but that's when you're likely to realize the greatest savings.
Consider alterations on pieces that don't quite fit. Even with a nominal fee for tailoring, you may still save a significant amount.
Examine secondhand merchandise very carefully for damages like stains, tears and separating seams.
Many outlet stores end up with irregulars. Try everything on to ensure proper fit and examine carefully for damages.
Always shop with secure online sites.

Our sample sale this past weekend brought a large group of customers from Greensboro, NC. There is a lot of enthusiam for one of our franchises opening in Greensboro. I am getting a list of stores to visit to gauge the retail environment in Greensboro as well as the commercial real estate.
We will have a franchisee meeting before our sample sale in April 11to meet people interested in opening a My Overstock Boutique franchise. I hope that we can start setting up with a new franchisee in Greensboro by late summer 2008 with the right person and right place lined up!

One of my favorite boutique suppliers and I meet twice a year. During these meetings I clear her boutique of all of her excess inventory. After I have packed the items in my van, she and I go through her next season's goods. I feel like a special client with perferred status at my own private showing. We talk about merchandising, her signage and my favorite pieces in her collections.

After our "Overstock Boutique" meeting, we are off to breakfast at a bakery for sweets and coffee. During our conversations we talk about our family and how our businesses affect our dialy lives. The discussions cover our spiritual beliefs, the love of special customers, challenges with employees, and up-coming trends in fashion. These meetings are some of my favorite intimate moments.

Most people with "regular jobs" don't understand what having your own business is like. I know that the people who trust their merchandise with me are handing something very important over to my care.

Because of this, I am always looking for ways to improve my consignment service for them. I want to make the store owners as much money as possible so they can continue to run the business of their dreams.

Over 40 boutiques are particating. Thomas notes that the 8000 sq ft warehouse houses over 5600 pieces of designer clothing. All are marked at least 50% off of retail prices. "Due to the downturn in retail sales, boutiques have an unusually large number of overstocks," explains Thomas. My Overstock Boutique sells the new inventory on consignment and plans on returning 50% of the total sales to the boutiques.

The large Sample Sale is scheduled for February 15th 11am-6pm, February 16th 10am-6pm and February 17th 1pm-5pm. Credit cards and cash are the forms of payment accepted. Admittance is free.

Directions to the warehouse are: take I40 West from Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill. I40W merges with I85. Continue towards Greensboro. Take exit 152, Trollingwood Rd. While watching the news, the word recession is mentioned over and over again. Retail analysts also use negative economic terms to describe the condition of the current retail environment.

It is a shame to note that during trying economic times, some businesses attempt to take advantage of small business owners. Boutiques with overstocks often take the quick route of selling all of their overstocks for pennies on the dollar.

During the last 22 years, My Overstock Boutique (a Stock Exchange spin-off business) has assisted small business owners with boutique quality overstocks. Our system is based on a consignment agreement that offers boutiques the chance to get back up to 25% of retail prices.

The warehouse is full of activity today. We are arranging our showroom with resort style clothing, Lilly Pulitzer, Lacoste, Tibi, Mint, Milly etc. It is so much fun to look at these vibrant colors while it is freezing outside.

I think the school that has reserved our warehouse for their private shopping party should also like the denim section (Citizens, Joe's, Earnest Sewn, J and Co, etc) We will also have coordinating tees and belts.

Several of the boutiques I have selected to become suppliers of ours are getting items in to us before the sale begins. I will be getting formals! (yeah, they also requested formals) shoes, and MORE clothing!

It is great to get organized with the resort clothing as we have set the date for the Spring Break Sample Sale. The sale is Friday Feb. 15, 16 and 17 and we are preparing invitations, posters, email lists for this event.

I am working on "playlists" for the music for these events and need help!
